Project „Improvement of health care for children in Lithuanian and Polish border region”
An international project for the improvement of health of children is under way.
Alytus County S. Kudirkos Hospital, together with Marijampolė, Suwalki (Poland) and Bialystok (Poland) Hospitals, from the beginning of 2017, are implementing a joint project named „Improving Children Health Care in the Lithuanian-Polish Border Region”. It is funded by the European Union INTERREG V-A Lithuanian-Polish Cross Border Cooperation Program (a total budget of almost 1 million EUR). Thanks to the support of the project, the Alytus County S. Kudirka Hospital acquired 4 sets of important and modern medical equipment: high-definition video-laparoscopic systems with a set of children’s surgical instruments, artificial ventilation and anesthetic apparatus and a modern otorhinolaringologist workplace equipment.
The main objective of the ongoing project is to provide additional knowledge and new equipment to participating institutions to provide better quality medical services for children in the border region. Based on practice and medical science facts, treatment guidelines and medical methods change and move forward up to 40% every year, with many innovations occuring, that medical professionals need to master and apply in practical work to achieve more effective treatments. Therefore, continuous improvement of qualifications is both a duty and a necessity. To achieve the best results, trainings for various physicians involved are organised throughout the whole project. They take place in Alytus, Marijampolė, Bialystok or Suwalki. There are also workshops for children in schools and children’s social institutions.
In order to disseminate the successful practices and project results to everyone, the materials of training, meeting recordings and workshops for both children and medics will be prepared and presented online in the format of electronic books (for medics) and in memory books (for children) in the Lithuanian and Polish languages. The final conference summary of the project results is scheduled to take place in Marijampolė and it will be directly streaming online for everyone to see.
Project is expected to be completed until 31st of December 2018.

Ongoing Project „Osteoporosis is not a sentence – a pilot cross-border PL-LT programme to fight osteoporosis”.
The problem of osteoporosis is very important and relevant in our modern world. Therefore, two Lithuanian and Polish border partners: Alytus County S. Kudirka Hospital and Dr. L. Rydygier Voivodship Hospital in Suwalki have joined forces and initiated a joint project to fight osteoporosis called „Osteoporosis is not a sentence – a pilot cross-border PL-LT programme to fight osteoporosis”. The project seeks to improve living standards for people living in the border region, develop cooperation and joint initiatives at the regional level, guaranteeing a high level of medical infrastructure and protecting the local population from social exclusion. Partners in both Alytus and Suwalki will organize joint active educational and health promotion activities for the 50+ age group.
The Planned project is a cross-border joint initiative of the Voivodeship Hospital in Suwalki and the Alytus District Hospital. Project partners jointly address the issue of poverty and social exclusion of the Polish-Lithuanian borderland inhabitants and with this project the partners aim to increase access to high quality health care in the field of osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment for border region population. This goal will be achieved through implementation of joint pilot cross-border programme of fighting osteoporosis: “Osteoporosis is not a sentence”, consisting of comprehensive activities addressed to medical staff (trainings, study visits, improvement of osteoporosis dedicated infrastructure) and society (awareness campaigns, including informational, educational and preventive activities (medical tests, physical exercises). Project strategic operations to raise awareness to the public, in this case of healthcare programmes and dangers of osteoporosis, will include a multi-faceted social campaigns, which will be implemented in close cooperation with NGOs from Poland & Lithuania. Their involvement in project is crucial for success and successful spread of awareness. The main project activities involve implementation of Polish-Lithuanian social campaign (informational & educational meetings, exercises, diagnostic examinations for elderly) and the improvement of diagnosis and treatment (trainings, study visits, creation of cross-border centres for diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in Suwałki and Alytus).
The main expected results of this project are: an increase of awareness of Polish-Lithuanian border community, an increase in access to high quality healthcare services by creating mirror centers of diagnosis of osteoporosis and treatment and also the improvement of special medical knowledge of staff in partner hospitals.

Reanimation and intensive care unit
In Alytus Stasys Kudirka regional hospital the modern reanimation and intensive care unit provides intensive therapy and reanimation aid all day. According to the owned institution license, we can provide reanimation and intensive therapy assistance to various levels. Reanimation and intensive care unit (ICU) is one of the hospital’s divisions where patients with severe and life-threatening illnesses and injuries, which require constant monitoring and support by equipment, medication and trained staff are taken care of to maintain stable bodily functions. Since 2008, the department also carries out emergency cardiology aid project. Patients with severe cardiac illnesses are transported to Vilnius University Hospital Santariškės Clinics Cardiology department for further urgent invasive cardiological procedures.
Our department specializes in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke and pulmonary arterial thromboembolism for which temporal external and internal (endocardial) electrical stimulation of the heart is applied. We have recently started using an ultrasound apparatus for the diagnosis of vital function disorders.
Adult patients are provided with assistance from ICU adult unit and children are provided with assistance from ICU children’s unit. Although both units do not possess many beds (10 in total, 6 for adults and 4 for children), both units are very important for hospital activities, since this is where often patients with life-threatening conditions are saved. ICU specialists hold the appropriate education, high qualifications and many years of work experience. They are also assisted by qualified nurses and junior medical staff.
The ICU adult unit consists of 13 physicians and 16 nurses and the ICU children unit employs 5 physicians and 11 nurses. In both units combined, 9 nursing assistants are present.
The ICU unit is equipped with modern, sophisticated, vital functions supporting and controlling equipment. Furthermore, the staff is constantly improving and raising qualifications for medical development. Recently, an EU-compliant renovation of the unit has been completed, thus providing contemporary environment and high-quality services for existing patients.
INFORMATION FOR RELATIVES
If your relative is treated in the ICU unit, you must be aware that the patient needs to rest, therefore visitors are not allowed. Visitations are only possible with the consent of the staff, between 12:00 to 13:00 and 17:00 to 19:00 every day. Children under the age of 16 are not allowed in the unit. According to the current legislation norms, information about the patient’s health is not provided by phone. The main focus point of our department is the patient’s health and well-being, we serve the people and we are open to our community.

Hemodialysis Unit
The hospital has a fully functional, full-time hemodialysis unit. Hemodialysis is a process of purifying the blood of a person whose kidneys are not working normally. Hemodialysis procedures are essential for patients with chronic renal failure. In here, outpatient and inpatient hemodialysis procedures are performed, to which patients are brought and returned home with the help of hospital transport. In addition, after the procedures are done, patients are also left to rest and given lunch.
There is a total of 8 functional beds for hemodialysis. For outpatients and inpatients hemodialysis is performed daily from 7:00 to 18:00 with two shifts. Emergency hemodialysis are carried out 24/7.
The unit consists of 2 therapists and 2 nephrologists, also 3 nurses and 2 medical technicians. The patients in need of hemodialysis procedures are sent from the National Nephrology Center and from our hospital.

Women’s Health
The gynecology and midwifery department is the hospital’s in-patient health care unit, which provides midwifery, neonatology, pregnancy pathology and gynecology services.
The objective of the Division is to provide timely, high-quality and qualified second-level in-patient midwifery, neonatology, pathology and gynecology services.
The activities of the Division are ensured in the structure profiles:
The Midwifery Profile provides emergency counseling for delivery of maternity and childbirth, urgent and planned help during childbirth with low perinatal risk. In the case of a high perinatal risk, the SAM legislation issues transfer of maternity and delivery to a higher-level hospital.
In the midwifery profile, full-fledged examinations and monitoring of both fetal and maternal conditions are carried out, also during childbirth as well. When indications of some sort are seen, the delivery is terminated by surgical methods. Pregnant and postpartum women are provided with full-fledged nursing care, adequate post-operative care if pathological labor occurs. Nursing of healthy newborns is provided with conditions of newborns to be in the same ward together with the mother if required. In the maternity ward, a physician-midwife-gynecologist is working on duty around the clock, in postpartum wards patients are taken care by nurses and physicians according to their schedule.
In the Newborns Pathology Profile, ill infants are treated. In the case of indications and / or severe perinatal pathology, according to prescribed legislation of SAM, newborn babies are placed in the unit of children’s reanimation and intensive care and / or transferred to a Level III specialized institution. A neonatologist, child nurses or midwives are operating in this profile.
The Pregnancy Pathology Profile provides urgent and planned help for conservative and surgical treatment for patients suffering from a wide range of pregnancy pathologies, various extragenital and complex pregnancy complications. If necessary, according to the SAM legislation, pregnant women are brought to a higher-level hospital. In this profile, physicians-midwives-gynecologists are present.
In Midwifery Day Care Profile, services and consultations are provided daily from 9.00 to 18.00; Services such as planned conservative treatment of pregnancy pathology, observation and fetal monitoring, laboratory tests and preoperative preparations are provided and conducted here. Physicians-midwives-gynecologists and midwives work in this profile.
The Gynecological Profile provides urgent and targeted assistance to patients, applies conservative and surgical treatment to patients with various acute and chronic gynecological diseases, carries out diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, interventions and abortions. In this profile, physicians-midwives-gynecologists, nurse assistants or midwives are constantly present.
Urgent and planned help for pregnant women in Admission – Emergency department, maternity and adolescent reception, maternity wards and nurseries is provided by physician-midwife-gynecologist on duty, according to schedule, around the clock.
Safe and comfortable Environment Provision for the Newborn and the Mother:
Modern and cozy environment ensured in the division of midwifery and gynecology – from the reception and waiting rooms to comfortable and modern maternity wards. Contemporary and bright rooms and maternity wards will satisfy the needs for patients to feel comfortable and cozily during childbirth and after birth and will also satisfy the necessity of the patients to be with their closest people.
One maternity room is designed with a cozy waiting room for several family members to fit, which can be accessed directly from the outside. All other four maternity wards are equipped with fetal tracking, neonatal reanimation equipment, air conditioning ventilation, wall heating systems and hydromassage baths.
Sincere, genuine and qualified attention of physicians, midwives and professional care staff is guaranteed:
Eight physicians-midwives-gynecologists provide qualified obstetrical and gynecological care for patients with qualified baby care provided by two neonatologists. Newborns are being treated if needed in newborn rooms near the nursing wards, close to mothers. In case of severe pathologies, newborns are brought to the hospital’s reanimation and intensive care unit.
After the departure from the hospital, if needed, newly became mothers can always obtain consultations from physicians, neonatologists and midwives on infant health, development and nutrition issues.
– Epidural analgesia (childbirth pain relief) is used if indications are present.
– Effective acupuncture therapy is applied to relieve pain and stress.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology operates a School for Future Parents
Health is one of the most important solid bases for all the baby’s future life, so it’s important to consider and solidify this foundation when the idea of having a baby even occurs.
All the fears come from the unknown. Therefore, the more you know, the less you fear. And the less fears and uncertainties occur, the more beautiful and the more complete the months will be developing mother and child connection.
To help future mothers to prepare for maternity, postnatal, neonatal nutrition and nursing, The Department of obstetrics and gynecology at Alytus S. Kudirkos Hospital organizes pregnancy schools called „Preparing to Become Mom and Dad”. These are free courses for future parents to obtain practical and theoretical knowledge about becoming good parents. Short but useful training sessions consist of 4 classes:
First session – Mondays
- Pregnancy nutrition, regime and the influence of harmful habits;
- Physiological changes during pregnancy;
- Peculiarities of Fruit Development;
Second session – Tuesdays
- First pregnancy period;
- Maternal anxiety and psychological readiness for delivery;
- Familiarity session of the hospital and maternity wards;
Third session – Wednesdays
- Second pregnancy period;
- Biomechanics of childbirth;
- Placental period;
Fourth session – Thursdays
- Postpartum period experience;
- Female regime postpartum;
- Newborn nutrition and nursing aspects;
Sessions are carried out by midwifery practitioners, who provide all information about childbirth, signs of pregnancy, department’s childbirth anesthetic methods, acupuncture, postpartum peculiarities and newborn nutrition. During classes, questions by everyone are answered in detail, also the opportunity to observe the rooms and maternity wards is given.
The sessions are held 2 times a month from Monday to Thursday, in small groups in quiet and supportive environment with a cup of tea. Fathers are very welcome to join anytime. Here they will learn how to help a mother to cope with childbirth pain, learn ways how to partake in breathing and massaging exercises. We recommend visitations to the school not only for mothers expecting their firstborn child, but also for all future mothers and fathers.
We invite the whole family to attend the Paternity School in Alytus St. Kudirka Hospital. Register for the first session from the beginning of the pregnancy to the 20th week of pregnancy, furthermore Register for II – III – IV sessions from the 30th week of gestation.

It is already commonplace in the modern world to encourage the participation of a woman’s husband or partner during childbirth. A support person can be both a physician and any other close person to the mother. A supported woman feels safe, better understands the various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and is pleased with her efforts and their outcomes. Only one person, who is chosen by the pregnant woman, can attend the birth together. It is desirable that the person could be a trainee.
A support person can physically and mentally aid a woman by:
– walking together
– giving a back massage
– offering a drink or a snack;
– helping to find a comfortable position;
– Aiding in washing, relaxing in the shower or bath;
The supportive person can offer some simple pain relief procedures:
– gently massaging or stroking;
– Putting a warm or cold compress;
– Helping to breathe properly;
– Helping to relax;
Emotional support is of great importance as well such as:
– Eye contact;
– Informing on the situation;
– Praise, incentives and the like.
A person wishing to be present at the maternity ward of obstetrics and gynecology with a woman who has given birth 24 hours a day, he must pay the hospital accommodation costs and pay for the meals (if they wish).
Birth certificates are issued every working day from 10.00 to 15.00 o’clock in postpartum wards. If the birth is registered not on a working day, the certificates are issued on the next following working day.
Acupuncture is a form of alternative ancient eastern medicine method, in which thin needles are inserted into certain parts the body to relief labor and postpartum pains. In the Obstetrics and Gynecology department, Acupuncture subtleties with intensive courses were taught by acupuncture specialist from Sweden, Lilleba Ancker, who has 25 years of work experience in Acupuncture. In 1978, she completed her medical studies, in 1980-1984 she studied acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine in Japan, China and the United States. Since 1998, she organizes acupuncture courses for midwives and also works in the field of midwifery and is the most recognized acupuncture lecturer in Nordic countries. Nurses and midwives, who have completed the courses, were issued by state-designated model certificates.

Day Surgery Center
The Day Surgery Center is one of the most contemporary hospital units and the only one in Alytus country. The center opened its doors to patients in March 2005. The Center is well-equipped with modern operation rooms and post-operation wards and highly qualified nursing staff. Day Surgery Center performs planned gynecological, otorhinolaryngological, traumatological, pediatric, urological and ophthalmic operations daily. One of the more complex eye cataracts (lens opacification) surgeries are also performed here. An Anesthesiologist advises the patient before the surgery, chooses the right analgesic method and provides analgesics after surgery. Operations are carried out by the physicians working at the hospital.
Annually, the Day Surgery Center performs more than 2000 different operations. The main advantage of such a center is that the patient does not need to stay in the hospital and it also lowers the risk of infection and psychological trauma for children and the elderly. Thus, allowing faster recovery of the patients in their home environment. Patients leave the Day Surgery Center after the operation on the same day.

Traumatology and Orthopedic division
In this unit, complex hip replacement surgeries take place with more than 800 arthroscopic knee joint operations already performed. Many thousands of complicated fractures of various limbs are operated here. Surgeons, traumatologists and orthopedics are people whom are always holding a scalpel or any other surgical instrument in their hands and are always ready to help patients overcome their misfortune.
Patients are operated in contemporary, high-standard operating rooms, which were recently upgraded and renovated, with high quality technical and operational reconstruction work lasting around 8 months and completed in 2006. Nearly 40 physicians in previously mentioned operating rooms carry out more than 6 thousand different surgeries every year.
Arthroscopy is a method of examination and treatment of the joint while using a specialized video-optical system and specialized instruments. This method differs in the way that the joint examination is not performed via surgical incision, but only a few small holes are made for the optimization of tool usage. The superiority of this method is the reduction of trauma of the surgery itself, possibility of a more throughout examination of the injury and thus a more successful outcome of the operation. In addition, much faster recovery has been observed using this specific methodology in comparison to open joint surgeries.
The most common surgeries are knee arthroscopic operations. Many knee joint injuries are treated arthroscopically, also meniscus tears, ligament injuries and many others. These surgeries were first performed more than 15 years ago in Alytus, thus highly experienced staff in this specific field is present. In addition, ankle, elbow and shoulder joint arthroscopy is also performed, in which the ligaments are stitched, and joints are purged. We carry out more than 300 arthroscopic operations every year both in the hospital and the Day Surgery Center.

General Surgery division
The General Surgery division is a multidisciplinary unit of the hospital which offers urgent and emergency surgical, urological and traumatological operations 24/7. The unit receives help from 7 adult surgeons, 6 children’s surgeons and an urologist.
In the contemporary operating rooms, installed according to the European Union standards, about 1400-1500 operations are performed every year. By applying approved surgical procedures, which usually involves conventional or mini invasive techniques (using video-optical systems and specialized tools) many biliary, appendicitis and hernia ailments are operated. Patients with varicose veins, hemorrhoids and other similar illnesses are also treated here.
For the planned operations, patients are consulted in the consultation clinics, where they arrive with a transfer from their family physician. After, test results are evaluated, Anesthesiologists are informed, and the date of the surgery is set.
The Unit has an on-duty adult and children’s surgeon present 24/7, whom provides emergency help and performs urgent operations for patients who experienced abdominal or chest organs injuries. The division’s work is well complemented with modern and highly evaluated diagnostic department, which holds a contemporary laboratory and the well organized and modern reanimation and intensive care unit.

Admission – Emergency department
The vision of the Emergency department is to become the leader in the region of South Lithuania in emergency services.
The Emergency department of S. Kudirkos regional Hospital in Alytus Country belongs to the B category, meaning that the hospital can provide multi-profile level II personal health care services. The main activity of the department is the provision of services to patients, who arrived for an emergency medical attention and hospitalization.
Emergency medical attention is provided 24 hours a day by physicians at the Emergency department, whom are assisted by nurses and nurse assistants. In difficult cases neurologists, surgeons, traumatologists-orthopedists, children’s surgeons, midwives gynecologists, ophthalmologists, otorhinolaryngologists and III-rd level specialists are there to consult patients. Clinical laboratory also operates 24 hours a day, thus instrumental diagnostic procedures are provided. The skills of the working staff are regularly improved and evaluated at courses organized by the department of Extreme medicine at the Lithuanian University of health sciences (LSMU).
In the Emergency department, a patient can get a preliminary diagnosis, in some cases – the final one. If the diagnosis requires regular monitoring, further investigation and evaluation, the patient is hospitalized for observation. This service can take up to 24 hours. If it is impossible to provide services necessary for the patient, his transportation to another health care institution is organized. By way of exception, the department also provides primary personal health care services, however they are paid if they do not comply with the terms and regulations of the main primary health care centers (PSPCs).
The department is currently undergoing a better-quality policy. The main goals we have today are:
⦁ Reduce time from the patient’s referral to the Reception of the Emergency department to the preliminary assessment of the condition to 15 minutes;
⦁ To seek that the terms of the urgent assistance (from the time of application to the reception office until the preliminary assessment and services provision) would comply with the legislation norms of the Republic of Lithuania;
⦁ To Strive for patients who are scheduled to be hospitalized would not wait in the department longer than 3 hours.
⦁ To Aim for the provision of services in accordance with the legal acts of the Republic of Lithuania and the standards approved by SAM or other directory of the institution.
⦁ To ensure that the continuity of services are proper to everyone.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation unit
Medical rehabilitation is a type of treatment for patients after undergoing difficult surgeries, trauma or chronic diseases. Medical rehabilitation is a complex application of medical rehabilitation measures (physiotherapy, kinesitherapy, ergotherapy, orthopedic and technical support, physiological help, medication treatment, patients and their relatives’ training, treatment diet, etc.) to restore disruptive bodily functions as quick and as best as possible to ensure healthy and full recovery of the patient. If the changes are irreversible, the medical rehabilitation is useful to achieve and maintain a certain level of functional capability. The compulsory health insurance for insured persons whom are sent to rehabilitation based on the instructions of their therapist, the full basic cost of the medical rehabilitation is paid from the budget of the Fund for Compulsory Health Insurance.
The department was reconstructed and renovated in 2014 with modern, cozy and comfortable wards and helpful medical staff available at your service.

The department provides patients with services such as:
- Rehabilitation specialist consultations;
- Evaluation of patients’ functional status, preparation of a treatment and rehabilitation plan;
- Rehabilitation measurements;
- Rehabilitation plan implementation;
- Evaluation of the effectiveness of rehabilitation measures.
Physiotherapy procedures include pain relief procedures with an electric current (TENS, diathermic current, etc.), electrostimulation of muscles, low and medium frequency electrotherapy, magnetotherapy, ultrasound therapy laser therapy, darsonvalization, treatment with ultrahigh frequency, microwave therapy, ultraviolet therapy and inhalation procedures. For Ergotherapy and Kinesitherapy individual and group sessions are complied. The department also provides hydrotherapy services.
Underwater massage
Underwater massage is a method of treatment when a patient’s body is massaged with a water stream while the patient is submerged in a water body.
Parameters: The nozzle through which the water flows is stored under the water and the distance from it and the massaged body is around 5 cm. The bath’s water temperature is 34-37 °C. Water flow pressure is from 100 kPa to 300 kPa.
Underwater massage implementation:
When a patient is submerged in a massage bath, a whirlpool massage equipment without air is turned on for about 2-3 minutes. After that, the patient is massaged with a stream of water. The direction of the water stream is calibrated according to the general rules of massage. The massage techniques vary in resemblance of hand massage: stroking, rubbing, vibration. The massage is performed by spherical movements, clockwise from the periphery to the center of the body, from the distal parts to the limbs towards the proximal part of the body. After the massage with water stream is done, the underwater whirlpool massage equipment (jacuzzi) is turned on again for another 2-3 minutes, but with air this time. It is forbidden to direct the flow of water to the heart area, breasts or genital area.
Dosage:
Massage duration is around 20-25 minutes. It is performed every day or every other day to the patient. The treatment course varies, from up to 6-20 procedures per person. Th treatment course is usually repeated 2-3 months later to ensure the positive progress.
The flow of warm water affects deeper tissues: it relaxes the muscles, reduces pain, improves circulation of blood and lymph, accelerates the absorption of chronic inflammatory processes. It is used for the treatment of inflammation and diseases of the joints, spine, peripheral nervous system and various injuries. It is also utilized for the prevention of cellulite and overweight.
Kinesitherapy in water
Kinesitherapy in water is a therapeutic exercise performed while submerged in a water body, under the supervision and guidance of a kinesitherapist.
Vertical bath
Vertical bath (therapeutic exercise in deep mineral water pool) is one of the most effective procedures for treatment of spinal inflammatory, degenerative-dystrophic diseases and their complications (Bechterew’s disease, deformed osteochondrosis, discogenic radiculitis, etc.) In a vertical bath, various exercises are carried out next to the deep mineral water pool wall with various water support measures. Due to high muscle relaxation and partial weight loss in water, the patient can complete active healing exercises much easier and almost painlessly. After the vertical bath treatment, the muscles and ligaments increase and strengthens, alongside with increased spine agility. Movement becomes easier and much less painful and often the pain disappears altogether.
The duration of one session is about 30 minutes. Water temperature is around 35 – 36 °C. A vertical bath is suitable for people who wishes to reduce back pain or have movement issues.
Pearl baths
These are body massages with air bubbles at 36-37 ºC in water. The skin’s nerve receptors are affected by temperature and mechanical factors. The procedure relaxes the muscles, the central nervous system, reduces irritation and improves blood circulation and accelerates metabolism.
Turpentine baths
Turpentine baths stimulate blood and lymph circulation, cell metabolism, accelerate blood plasma renewal, enhance protective functions of the body, tone up and regenerate the skin. They also act as anti-inflammatory treatments. Turpentine bath is especially effective for treating joint and respiratory diseases and also for atherosclerosis of the blood vessels of the legs, improving blood flow to the lower body, which is essential.

CLINICAL DIAGNOSTICS LABORATORY OBJECTIVES, TASKS AND QUALITY POLICY

To achieve the above stated objectives, the laboratory carries out the following tasks:
- Rationally distributes and uses available funds;

- Under the guidance of Alytus County S. Kudirkos Hospital Administration, develops and implements quality management system documentation (hereinafter referred to as „KVS”) and develops continuous improvement of quality by installing KVS;
- Strives to update the material base, seeks to ensure the quality of the provided services;
- Seeks to improve the material well-being of the laboratory staff;
- Establishes internal and external quality control, self-control measures.
In pursuit of above stated goals and objectives, the laboratory carries out the following functions:

- Ensures that the tests are carried out at the appropriate technical level, strictly in accordance with the requirements of the test methods;
- Makes certain that work is carried out by competent and well-skilled staff;

List of performed tests:
The laboratory operates around the clock, serves all hospital departments, the consulting clinic and contracts with other health facilities. Samples for research and tests are accepted in the newly established laboratory admission. Over 400 hundred thousand of different tests are conducted annually. Hematology tests are carried out using modern automated analyzers. Qualitative and quantitative research is carried out.
Urinalysis has a partially installed closed urinary collection system. These tests are automated, and microscopy is performed using an automated microscopic analysis programme.
Routine biochemistry and immunochemical tests are conducted using integrated analytical systems. Here, research and tests of metabolites, electrolytes, enzymes, lipids, carbohydrates, hormones, heart damage, anemia, and some drugs and cancer markers are carried out. Investigations of coagulation factors are performed by well-known and recognized automated analyzers.
Infectious sign tests are researched by immunochemical methods. Here, some antibodies to viruses and bacteria are established. Immunohahematological investigations are carried out by means of a columnar method – one of the first automated systems installed in Lithuania. With this technology an investigation of a recipient’s blood is performed – blood group according to ABO and Rh antigen systems, antibody search, blood compatibility tests, determination of neonatal ABO blood group and Rh D factors, direct and indirect Coombs test.
The list of tests and research done in the laboratory is constantly reviewed and expanded. To increase the possibilities of laboratory diagnostics, we always try to improve the quality of analysis and participate in various external quality assessment programmes.

Diagnostics division
With the help of modern diagnostics equipment, the S. Kudirkos Hospital of Alytus County is capable to offer the highest quality service to patients. The Diagnostics division is currently undergoing a full range of up-to-date research.
Extensive testing is possible not only because of the latest hardware purchased, but also by highly qualified specialists. They are highly recognized their field experts who have qualified in clinics in countries such as Germany, Austria, Hungary, France, Israel and many others. The department’s specialists are assisted by diligent nurses who are knowledgeable in their work and are always ready to provide patients with the necessary information. Endoscopy – examination of hollow organs: esophageal, gastric, duodenal, large intestine research and various manipulations are carried out (minor tumor removal, bleeding stones, stone removal and others) with a flexible video endoscope.
ERCP (Retrograde Pancreatococcalangiography) – examination of the bile and liver ducts via the duodenum.
Echoscopy – ultrasound examinations of the parenchyma, liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, superficial thyroid, breasts, swollen, muscles and partial hollow organs, such as blood vessels, heart and urticaria.
Transcranial (through the skull bone) doppler ultrasonography – brain blood testing using ultrasound, such as velocity of blood flow through brain’s blood vessels.
Encephalography – Recording of electrical bio-potentials of brain using electric current sensors.
Electrocardiogram (Electrocardiography) – registering Heart Electrical Biopotentials.
Veloergometry – registering heart electrical biopotentials using bulk strain samples.
Spirography – recording the volume and activity of the lungs using the volume of inhaled and exhaled air and the composition of the gas.
Radiological examination – planar examinations of bones, lungs, stomach, intestines and renal function using X-rays with or without contrast.
Mammography – a flat-bottomed breast examination study using X-rays.
Computer tomography – a transverse test of the head, chest, abdomen and other body parts using X-ray special modes, alongside with investigated organ’s planar examination with or without contrast.
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) – a study of various body regions using the digital registration of He kinetic energy emitted from body tissue cells.
In addition to extensive testing, minimal invasive procedures are performed: drainage of cysts with the help of ultrasound, endoscopic removal of polyps, pulling and shredding of stones from the bile ducts, etc. A wide range of palliative care treatments are also carried out, including bleeding arrest, stenting, vascular clipping and the like.
Essential Pre-Testing procedures:
For general echoscopic, endoscopic and electroencephalographic testing, it is enough to obtain the physician’s or polyclinic family physician’s referral and transfer, with which you can register for a consultation for a suitable time and specialist. The registration can be done by phone, the internet or on arrival at the consultation clinic. Upon receipt, you must have the written referral for the consultation by the sending physician with you and you must not be late to arrive for the consultation, as required. If the consultation is registered by a polyclinic, the referral will be entered on your health card. Without the referral, there will be no reason to conduct a test. If you do not have time to wait for the test results, you can book a paid consultation at the hospital checkout. It is also possible to obtain a consultation without a referral, however then the consultation is paid, if the patient does not have health insurance (except for radiological tests). Pricing and terms of delivery are published.
All other tests are performed only with the referral of the physician-consultant. Expensive studies: Computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are performed exclusively with the referral from Level II physicians: orthopedic traumatologists, neurologists, and the like.
In case of improperly prescribed referrals, patient being late to a consultation or improper preparedness of the patient, the testing will not be performed.

Treatment of Children diseases
Our young patients are treated with infant, somatic and infectious diseases profiles. Babies and children (0-18 years old) with somatic, respiratory air droplet infections and various infectious (intestinal, neuroinfectious, viral, other invasive and unspecified) diseases are treated here. Patients are consulted and treated by physicians’ specialists: seven pediatricians, a pediatric neurologist, a pediatric cardiologist and pediatric pulmonologist. Safe childcare is ensured by the nearby situated children’s reanimation and intensive care unit. Physicians on duty provides counseling and emergency assistance to children arriving to the Children’s Reception Department. For patients undergoing treatment or consultation, we carry out both simple and complex laboratory, endoscopic, echoscopic, computer tomography scans. We will also be conducting a magnetic resonance examination soon.
The modern, bright and comfortable children wards delight our youngest patients and children with somatic diseases, with warm care from our nurses and physicians. Infectious disease profile premises are also upgraded. It is planned to be completely reconstructed soon.

Internal Diseases department
During summer of 2015, the Alytus County Stasys Kudirka Hospital, renovated its Internal Diseases Division I and it was opened officially to public in the five-storied Internal Diseases Corps. Its repairs cost almost 380 thousand euros. It is one of the stages of the project funded by the State Investment Programme, which aims to upgrade and renovate all remaining untouched sections of the Internal diseases Corps.
The purpose of Division I of Internal Diseases is to provide timely and qualified, prompt and planned health care to a patient. It also includes specialized endocrinology and rheumatology health care services.
Patients’ examination is ensured on the basis of the institution’s research base – co-clinical, biochemical, immunological, hormonal, hematological, radiological and others.
In Division I of Internal Diseases department, the hospital provides level II in-patient services: internal diseases, rheumatology, endocrinology and nursing.

In Division II of Internal Diseases department, the unit provides level II in-patient services: Internal diseases, Gastroenterology, Infectious diseases, Dermatovenereology, Dermatovenereology Day Hospital and Nursing.

Cardiology division
The purpose of the cardiology unit is to provide qualified cardiological and therapeutic assistance
The unit performs the following functions:
– Provides level II in-patient cardiology and therapeutic services;
– Ensures proper diagnosis of diseases, performed based on special requirements and using the diagnostics database in the establishment.
In 2012, a reconstruction of the Cardiology division was carried out, financed by a grant from the EU Structural Funds. Due to the help of project named „Reduction of the morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular diseases in the Central and Western Lithuania in the modernization and optimization of the infrastructure of the health care system and services provided” modern equipment was purchased and reinforced, changing the whole environment of the division. A total of around 850 thousand euros were allocated to the project. All of this fundamentally changed the treatment conditions, tactics and improved diagnosis of patients in the division.
At present, patients are treated in single, double, triple rooms wards with modernly equipped sanitary nurseries. The connecting wards have their own toilet, sink, mirror, shower.
The division meets patients with a cozy warmth from indoor flower greens, wall paintings, tasteful and understandable signs of the interior. In the rooms, sanitary units and in the showers used by the patients, there are medical emergency call facilities, that can be used to call a nurse. All social and household amenities for the disabled are in place. In some wards folding screens are used to preserve privacy through medical examination and for hygienic reasons. Night lighting is also working. The infrastructure of the cardiology department is currently in line with Western European medical standards.
